Temperature rating, lifetime, low ESR. could be any number of things like that.

In addition to dknguyen's comments, it could simply be age. The newer capacitors are much smaller than those made years ago due to better tech.

Don't know about 'better tech' - but the newer ones are smaller, and usually far less relaible.
 
It depends on the brand, Rubycon, Nichicon, Marcom and LRC are all good brands.

Anything made in Japan is also good, if it's a Chinese no brand capacitor then it might be good or cheap rubbish probably the latter.

Yeah that's what someone else was telling me also that different manufacturers use different materials so the caps are essentially the same but the only reason for the size difference is because some materials might be better than others so the size difference is needed to achieve the same result.
