What's Q factor

Q-factor for what kind of device ? Is it a transistor ? Is it a wound device like a inductor or transformer ? I know that for a transistor the Q-point is a factor, and that for wound devices Q-factor is also a consideration in the design. I bet if you do a google search you can find something...

It is the ratio of the inductive reactance to the resistance in a tuned circuit.

Q = (w*L)/R = (1/R)*sqrt(L/C)
where w is the resonant frequency in radians per second

Note that this is for when the resistor is in series with the L. If it is in parallel, use Q=R/(w*L).
