I am following a kit and it has some ceramic capacitors and some monolithic ceramic capacitors. What is the difference?

Very good information. I just don't understand why they used them on a LCD display that is to be controlled with a microcontroller!
 
They are often used to filter high frequency noise and transients on DC power lines. Another use is to block DC while allowing AC signals to pass.
