What is the difference between 6v and 6vs?

From where did you find this.. or in which application you have this confusion..?

:-D

I am getting on average 7.4 volts from 6VS. Is that normal or is that way too high?

Since the voltage labeled 6VS is unregulated rectified DC from a transformer winding, 7.4V is probably normal, depending upon its load.

"6VS" is what the wire is labeled, not necessarily what voltage will be on it. The designer of the system might just as well labeled the wire "foobar".

I agree that 7.4 V is probably fine. What is odd is that the two windings on the transformer are used in phase, only giving half-wave rectification. The rectifier is a double diode, so it would have been just about as easy to have full-wave rectification.
