what is back emf voltage?

Back emf is the voltage generated by the inductor caused by the collapsing magnetic field when the supply voltage across it has been removed.....its magnitude can be higher than the applied voltage, therefore in circuits such as a relay drive cct it is important to include a diode to counter the emf else the driving element (transistor ?) could be damaged
