variable dc supply requirements

Hi,

I am to prepare for a project so I need a power supply.
I want to make a list of what to consider in making the power supply.

Things on my mind:
1. What is the range?
2. What is the output current? (Can I make the output current also variable?)
3....

Could you add to my list and kindly help me understand the significance of the parameters that will be added. Thank you.
 
What safety parameters should be employed
Should it be load regulated or line regulated
Component Rating should match range

Hi,

Here are some other features decent bench supplies have, you may or may not need them all...

1. Dual output (2 channels), dual adjustment set, common ground.
2. Dual output but with two isolated outputs.
3. Current meter, voltage meter, both channels or switched between channels, analog or digital.
4. "Fine" and "Coarse" adjustments for both current limit and voltage. That's four pots per channel.
5. Multiple outputs, some fixed like 5v, 12v, 15v, etc.
6. Mandatory: short circuit protection.
7. Optional: variable AC output.
 
Digital/analog meter, accuracy/tolerance of meter, operating efficiency of PSU, operating/storage temperature, overcurrent/overvoltage protection.
 
Did anyone mention output ripple/noise, transient response, and efficiency?
