variable capacitor problems

In some of my projects I have needed a variable capacitor but the one I bought never works. It is a 4-36uF, screw adjustable variable cap. I would love any ideas!

I believe that is a 4-36pF cap. It's for tuning RF circuits. They don't make variable caps in microfarad size.
