using polar notation

Hi I need some help converting vector quantities into polar notation for working out complex impedances. I remember doing this some year ago but cannot remember the technique. I am not much of an artist and so phasor diagrams are not my strong point. I used to do this on an old casio calculator and since I bought a Texas instruments I have not managed to figure it out.

Sorry if this is a stupid question any help much appreciated

Errm ... given vector [x y] (transposed),

amplitude = sqrt(x^2+y^2)
phase = inv tan(y/x) (Subject to quadrant the phase belongs to)
