Hey.

Im now using a 555 timer to drive a 40kHz IR LED output for Radio Shack's
GP1U52X IR Receiver/Demodulator.

Do I have to connect the receiver to a tone decoder if im only using the bear 40kHz signal?

Im not using the 40kHz as a carrier.

Sharp's datasheet doesn't say what it does.
Other IR receivers have an output that goes low if it detects 40kHz modulated IR. They are designed to receive bursts of data. Therefore they reduce their sensitivity if continuous 40kHz IR is received because it might be interference from a compact fluorescent light bulb.

Actually you are! - it's NOT optional.

For object detection you might try my Cybot pages at
