Using a neon sign ballast to make an electrical arc

What was wrong with the simple capacitor charging from a current limited power supply?

You could add a bridge rectifier and capacitor to the supply then alter the spark gap width and dimmer switch setting to alter the spark rate.
 
what kind of neon sign transformer is it? voltage/milliamperage?
i really want a nst but i can't seem to find one cheap
