USART input into PIC

Can anyone please give me the most basic code in C with comments to initialize USART and take USART input??
I need to use it to take input from GPS system.

Initializing USART.
Taking input

The PIC 18F4550 datasheet has a good "USART" chapter that describes how to set up the USART to receive serial data.
