Measure the resistance across what's left of the terminals.
 
Looks like a firecracker to me =\ Can you get a better picture than that? The outside looks like some kind of conformal coating or heat shrink tubing. I'd have to second Chemelec's opinion, looks like an epoxied inductor.
 
a guitar modder, used this to improve the tone of the e.guitar, he replace the wire between the pickup switch and volume pot with this unknown device...
 
An inductor would probably make the tone more mellow.
