ultrasonic range finder circuit

i found a store that sell with only transmitter and receiver

my robot will stop if the USRF hit the maximum range
it will stop/sleep until a next sign

i reading the article in A Cheap Ultrasonic Range Finder but the timing make me confuse

hi,
The PIC pulses the TXR sensor at 40/42kHz for a short burst of pulses, at the same time the PIC starts an internal counter.
The RX sensor detects the 40/42kHz echo pulse, the PIC stops the counter.
Knowing that the speed of sound in air is approx 340mtr/sec it can calculate the total distance [to the target and back] from the time period in the counter.
So half the total distance is the range to the reflecting target.
