Does anyone know what type of LEDs are used in those amber LED lightbars you see on tow trucks and road service vehicles? Thanks

Standard 5mm high output LEDs. They usually use 5mm for such lights because it only needs to be bright enough to be seen rather than to see and 5mm LEDs are by far one of the cheapest.

Thanks DemonicSandwich and Vizier87, that was real helpful. I don't suppose you know roughly what mcd rating the leds will have? Thanks

Some very bright LEDs are actually fairly dim cheap ones mounted in a case that focusses and concentrates the light beam into a very narrow angle. They cannot be seen unless they point directly at you and are useless and illegal for vehicles. Look for thousands of mcd (brightness) and a viewing angle of 40 degrees or more.
