tilt sensor

a tilt sensor is just a switch with a conductive liquid inside. If you tilt it, it shorts out the switch. the liquid is usually mercury
 
yeah well, just use an accelerometer. It made to meaurse changes in axis. You can get 1, 2 or 3 accelerometer. One to measure X or Y even Z. I think it cost about $5 bucks a chip or something, can't remember. Do a search online.
