testing ps5 fan

If it's anything like a PC fan then:

The three pin header means it doesn't have PWM, this is only available with 4 pin headers.

The connections are Pin 1 = GND, Pin 2 = 5VDC or 12VDC and Pin 3 = Tacho signal.

Ok so it's not a pwm fan. So when I power it up with 12v it should just turn on? But I was told by another repair technician that the fan only comes on when it's needed.

Yes, 12VDC and GND on the correct pins and it should turn on.

If it only comes on when it's needed then that is probably controlled by a temp sensor and the motherboard?

The brand new fan from ifixit has arrived. Guess what applying 12v to the fan doesn't make it spin. Plugging it into the ps5 doesn't make it spin either. Whats confusing me is the ps5 is giving it 12v so why no fan spin.

also I found a square wave on pin three which is why I thought it was a pwm fan.

I have confirmed that in the ps5 case it is a pwm fan because as soon as I corrected the pin out and gave it a 25khz pwm signal it started spinning.

Plus the speed of the fan increased as the duty cycle increased
