suppresion diodes

in the datasheet, there are diodes which the datasheet identifies as suppresion diodes for inductive loads. What does this mean? Is it a form of protection? Some sources indicate that those are free wheeling diodes..What does the term free wheeling imply?

secondly, there are also another 2 diodes in the schematic diagram connected to each darlington pair. What are the functions of those two diodes? I sort of have a rough idea that its a form of protection but would like to understand it clearly.

Help is extremely appreciated.
