Hello guys,

Just some background: I graduated with my masters degree in electronic engineering last year (2014) and have been eager to start a simple project. I have always wanted to make something like a "Super Simple Mp3" player (http://www.teuthis.com/html/mp3.html), with the minimum amount of components. Although I have a degree, my practical experience is rusty to say the least (I am sure you're aware how theoretical degrees can be...).

Anyway, assuming I am somewhat of a beginner, how do you guys suggest I start this project?

I was thinking of buying the VS1011 decoder chip first (http://www.vlsi.fi/fileadmin/datasheets/vs1011.pdf), then play around with it using my Atmel SAM4Xplained board (http://www.atmel.com/tools/ATSAM4L-XPRO.aspx?tab=overview).

After that, I would then connect an SD card to my SAM4Xplained board in order to store the music files and play them off the VS1001?

That being said, as a first step, do you guys recommend me buying this easy to use board (**broken link removed**) to send data via SPI from my PC, maybe using some sort of USB-SPI converter? (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9235?gclid=Cj0KEQiAzO6zBRC25Ju1idGJiZkBEiQAP3Sf6A_PjCxsbOK9LgInf1rWBIsP94FL5l3KYYYvRYAqlwIaAlIZ8P8HAQ)

I would like to take "baby steps" in this project, so at this point, just pushing some data into the decoder and hearing the music using earphones would make me happy .

Any advice on my plans/direction would be amazing!

Thanks,

Fouad.

PS: I am no good at soldering, so I'm planning to just use a breadboard for all prototyping.
