Using a temperature controlled soldering iron may help a little, but modern components are very tough, it's difficult to damage them. But soldering should be very quick, one or two seconds is all a joint should take.
Like anything else, practice makes perfect, but I taught my daughter to solder in ten minutes or so, when she was about 9 or 10 years old - she's built a number of kits over the last few years, and solders quite well. Her DT teacher says she's the best solderer in the school, including himself!.
