software audio mixing

I'm not certain whether you were asking for a freeware multitrack or a stereo mixer application, but for some quick WAV editing/recording and simple mixing, I use the freeware program Audacity.

Otherwise and for most things I use the commercial program Steinberg Cubase. A relative of mine uses (and swears by) Cakewalk Sonar.

yes I have audacity my girlfriend wants to do some mixing and I'm not sure what that would entail I'm not sure audacity has the flexibility to actually mix and not having ever done it before via software I hope to start on a simple freeware to get our bearings

If you are talking about live signal mixing, I would recommend using a dedicated external board allowing for USB, IEE1394, or ADAT connections to the computer.

If you are looking to down-mix prerecorded signals to stereo, then Audacity is one of the best freeware applications that I have been able to find and it should do what your girlfriend wants. The program is very similar to the commercial softwares GoldWave or Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit), which have both been used in the music industry extensively in the past and still are to a somewhat smaller extent.

As an aside, it looks like Audacity is one of your few free options for Windows. I have never used any of the other free solutions listed on this Wikipedia page, so I cannot comment otherwise -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_editing

Earlier I familiar with PC DJ Red but it cost 200us$.But after coming Virtual DJ I shifted to that. Very smooth functioning. Even videos you can mix with it.
Plenty options voice canceling, more CUE points….etc…
I got that through my DJ Friends I don’t know whether it’s available for free download. Try in Warez Site.

What are you going to be using the 'mixer' for? You have to be very clear about what you mean. A mixer to a DJ and to an electrical engineer are very different things. You may know what you mean when you say/type it but you've so far completly failed to describe your intentions =)
