Well OK. SMPS setup makes the circuit much more stable providing a closed loop system where the exact monitoring of the output is done and the error (difference in output) is fed back to the input to higher.lower voltage. Using SMPS reuires the use of a frequency which is much higher than the line frequency. Normally around 30kHz.
Therefore when such votlages are fed to a filter capacitor, the ripple voltage is very much reduced and teh circuit goes more stable and adequate for sensitive circuits.
But now, what are you going to use the PS for ? Although SMPS is better, the PS offers simpler setups, cheaper components and can obtain high power very easily.
Therefore, first of all, check what you need the power for> if the circuit is sensitive or not.....
