Smart Metering System

Hi,
I am doing my final year project of smart metering system it includes the digitalizing of a simple electricity meter and then interfacing it to the GSM module for the sending of units used and the make a bill of the units used.
Can anyone help me and please tell me that which micro controller i should use

If you haven't used any EVER before. I would suggest looking for somebody who has done a similar project and see which uC they use. This way you will have a reference
