Smart House - Computer Interfacing

Am trying to do a computer interfacing project - the idea is to use a computer keyboard to control appliances in the home like the stereo, bulbs, TV, etc.

The plan is to use the PC parallel port to interface with these devices through a micro controller.

Please if you have any links or any e books that could help, I'd be glad to have them. If there are any other ideas as to how to approach the issue, I'd be very glad to hear.
