small circuit cutting power to 12v line?

I need to build a circuit that uses the signal sent to a speaker, then cuts power to a 12 volt (or less) line. Speaker signal is the trigger. Any suggestions or starting points?

use a buffer, rectify the signal, and use that to activate a transistor or a relay directly.

Or a LM3916 and pick the output pin to activate the relay triggering level circuit.
