"Simple IR Buglar Alarm"

Hello everyone...!!
I am just in my 3rd semester of Electrical Telecomm. Engineering...!!
studying "Digital logic Fundamentals" and "electronics 1"
i am about to do a project "IR Buglar Alarm"...!!

It is:
1)alarm sound when the ir beam is cut
2)remains on till reset button is pressed(flip flop)

Now as this the first time i am doing a project...dont know how IR reciever/generator works,its range,max voltage it can withstand...etc...!!
Please give some basic hints and tips...!!

Is it a reflected IR beam[TXR] or a remote IR detector.?

What distance do you to want to cover.?
