Serial ports with multiple Tx

Someone I know is working on a bus for electric vehicles which will support sensors tied to isolated batteries. They want to use RS232 serial. The Rx and Tx are tied together in a single open collector line, linked into the device via optocouplers.

That saves a lot of wire but there's also the issue of bus contention not only between two devices trying to transmit at the same time but a master cannot transmit either when another device is transmitting.

They don't have the packet protocol worked out yet. Is there a packet protocol out there that is already worked out to do this sort of thing?
