RS232 - pin 5 (signal ground SG)

I see it usually connected to the circuit's common at the DCE side.

Is it correct? What is the risk in leaving it floating?

Shouldn't it be floating, strictly speaking?

hi,
If its pin 5 on the 9 way 'D' RS232 connector, it is ground/0v/common and should NOT be left disconnected.

You could damage the line driver/receiver.
