I'm looking to build an RS232 monitor.
Can it be built without a microcontroller?
I have a feeling that it can't, I tought about using both RX's of a MAX232 but if I tied the output together one would hold the other down. I feel I have to bitbang two RX's and output on my Hardware Usart the combined inputs.

it depends what you call RS232 monitor.
here is circuit for monitoring RS232 using computer.
https://rs232.hw.cz/images/db9_monitor.gif

in local store they sell 'RS232 monitor' which is straight through
adapter with bunch of LEDs to monitor individual signals.
soooo.... what do you need?

I need to log the events between a master and slave but the two logs have to be alinged as we hare having a problem with some commands. I can do it with one pass with the RX then another with the TX but that is too slow.

I'm monitoring the 5V side then it goes into a MAX 232 to the computer.

I'll try that circuit you showed me and I'll see if that works.

Thanks

Ron

Hello panicmode,

Thanks for the tip.

What software is required in the computer to read the RS232 data?

Thanks Ron,
Are these freeware? If so, would I find them at a free download site?

Internet searching is not my speciality.
