You could use an iron dust core.
You could use a brass core.
You could uses another grade of ferrite.
You could just leave the coil with an air core.
However the circuit is unlikely to work correctly without the correct ferrite core.

I think you're scared of the coil thing , while trying to make this transmitter.
That is made by winding a 22guage enamelled copper wire on a 5mm diameter bolt or pen and remove the pen or whatever. Connect the 18p cap in parallel with that. See the picture.
