Skip the old mag cards, go with something modern like an iButton. The readers are little more than a 4.7K pullup resistor to a microcontroller I/O pin.
you're talking about cassette head readers? That's ancient dude. I have plenty of 'em too, but I don't know what to do with those things, they're just waiting amongst my myriad of more useful junk I keep.
