Take the adapter, solder header pins on it and tada SD card socket.

I'm using a 4G SDHC card for datalogging on my solar/battery monitor PIC controller project via a SPI port.

Well, you can get miniSD card sockets from Mouser. Don't know about microSD, but you'd just put the microSD into the miniSD adapter then into the socket. Then you won't have to sacrifice the miniSD adapter, and it'll be a PCB mount, if that's what you want.
