hi can anyone guide me as to how to use the 741A (dual op amp) for pre amping a stereo tape head.

A 741 is a VERY bad choice, it's an ancient low spec opamp, there are many much better opamps to use (and probably none that could be worse?). A tape head preamp requires very high gains and low noise, a 741 would not really be suitable.

A quick look on Discovercircuits gave this link https://www.electro-tech-online.com...0Head20Preamplifier20For20PC20Sound20Card.pdf.

You will also need the Proper Frequency Compensation for your Preamp.
I think its an "NAB" Curve for Tape.

There is a Transistor Preamp on my site that is Suitable, but you will need to come up with the part values for this NAB compensation.
I have determined the values for an "RIAA", Phono Comp, But never had a reason to figured out the NAB Tape Comp. It is Simular to the RIAA, But a bit different Slopes.

This is a Good Preamp and works best with a Supply of 15 Volts, and up to 40 volts.
