Will pulsing power to a linear actuator with a pic/relay (temporarily) damage it in anyway? Thanks!

the goal is to remove an automatic transmission shifter and replace it with capacitive buttons. The transmission has 3 ranges (A,B and C) which make a truth table...(park is possitive, Negative, positive for example in respect to the ranges above). The problem with the table is the combination for park in the example above is also used for Neutral. Reverse and 1st gear share (-,-,+) and 2nd and 3rd gear share (+,+,+). The pic will, depending on the current gear its in when it initially starts up, find its way to the park position by pulsing the actuator and looking for the next combination.
After it finds Park it will record the potentiometers value (inside actuartor) and move to the next gear in sequence recording those values also. From there it would rely on those values for positioning. However, if for any reason power was lost or the battery was removed it could find its way back to park (if it wasn't already) and re-record the values. I just thought this was a smart way to do it.
