powering 2 led strip lights with 1 esp32

Hi,
I have 1x esp32, 2x 24v 1000w power supplies and 2x ws2821b 10m strips
How can i use the esp to run both sets of lights, each one has its own power supply and the esp is powered by 1 of the power supplies with a buck converter to usb.

I tried connecting the grounds and it killed my esp32.

1. They are 24v neon strip lights.
2. i have 3x esp32 so stock count is actually 2x exp32, 2x 24v 1000w an 2x ws2821b 10m strips.

The is how they was connected.

Perhaps you didn't notice I said EXACTLY - you just posted a few coloured squiggles that are meaningless.

I'll also ask again, why are you using 24V power supplies, when the LED strips presumably run off 5V.

Single color, non-programmable LED strips are commonly 12v or 24V. The 24v option allows longer runs at the same width because the IR voltage drop.

1, I know that they are rgbic led lights enclosed in a silicon cover to give the appearance of a neon light, i was just explaining what they are.
2. Sorry Nigel a better explanation for you of my "Squiggles"
The led ws2821b are 24v hence the 24v dc power supply feeding them.
They working one i have ( i have 5 of these) are single strips 11204mm long with a single power supply and connected via soldering wires on the end and controlled with wled software via my pc.
The esp32 is connected with a standard usb cable plugged into the buck converter which is dc connected to the same 24v power supply.

As they are setup.
The esp32 is data pin D05 (middle of the esp32 board right side) is soldered to both the strips on the DI connection point (that means data in)
The 1 psu is connected to the 24v + and 24v- on the strip, and the other is the same on strip 2.
Then i jumped a 24v - cable from one terminal on the psu, to the 24v- terminal on the 2nd psu,

I then turned on, and the esp32 no longer worked and the lights did nothing.

Seems like your ESP32 is damaged. I don't give advice to people with broken parts - there is no chance for you to implement the advice. Call back when you replace your ESP.

Oh, now I see that you mis-informed us of your inventory. Well, my bad.

I didn't misinform you. I told you how I had the setup, I asked fornhelp and all seems to happen here is attack, attack, attack.
A simple information response like , "hi you need to look a wire from here to here " would be helpful as days have passed and all you lot seem to do is be keyboard warriors!

I have seen from searching your names that it's a common theme!.

You don't post proper responses, and never give pertinent information - from post #2 I asked for pictures of EXACTLY how you'd connected it, your response was reception child coloured crayon drawings, which were meaningless.

Seven posts and still nothing to work with.

Please post information for the power supplies, such as a link to the webpage where you bought them, a datasheet, a user manual, etc. If the supplies have an Enable input, your project might be pretty straightforward.

Please post information about the LED strips. Do you really need 2000 watts to power them?

What type are the buck converters?

From what I can put together from your description, the PSUs are larger than the LEDs likely need?

Won't one PSU run both LED strips?
That and a single DC-DC converter for the ESP, plus keeping all the 0V/ground connections as short as practical, should work fine?

Add a 100R or 220R resistor between the ESP output and LED strip data input for a bit of extra protection?


If there is a long or thin cable between the PSU and LED strip, the voltage drop on the negative side may be enough to "lift" the data input ground at the strip, relative to the PSU ground - which can kill the ESP32 output. All ground cables buts be short enough and heavy enough so voltage drops are no more than millivolts.

If that is impossible, you need to add a high speed logic level opto-isolator between the ESP and each LED strip data input, so the data input signal is references to the actual strip 0V.
