hi guys...got a little tired of soldering and i decided to take some experiment out.
now this one, i took-out the lence of a dead CD rom and i actually got deep down into the coil. i really could not figure-out what i saw, it looked like a transceiver or will i call it a phototransistor?. it comprises of a mentalic case with three terminals coming out from it and the surface was covered with glase. my belive is that, it's actully a transmitter and receiver combined together. my question is, what is the name of this componet and what function does it perform?
I also read it with my meter..... and it read exactly like how a transistor will read.....base common to both emitter and collector.
please i need information on this componet....thanks guys.

Depending what part you've actually got, it's could be a laser diode (basically a type of LED). There are also a number of photo-transistors (or photodiodes), probably at least seven of them?.

The laser are EXTREMELY static sensitive, assuming it worked before, you might have killed it by touching it.
