I just found a PIC14000 - 04/SP ,and I think I may have a few other, on some of my salvaged PC boards and my question is; is this an up to date PIC or is it obsolete, is it worth learning how to write for it or should try learning a different chip and where is a good place to go for the information. I've worked with latter logic, and hope it works some what the same.
Thanks,
Kinarfi

Forget it and take latest and running items . may be in PIC18F series
or 16F18XX series

i find that Jameco sells that part and it is OTP. look here https://www.electro-tech-online.com/custompdfs/2011/12/P4-6.pdf
at right side towards the end.

also microchips specific location to find a datasheet is here. https://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en010116
If you find 3 more digits (XXX) after "PIC14000-04/SP-XXX" it is OTP and otherwise blank but could perhaps be tried once only. however, being a One time programmable chip, it is of no use and you can safely forget it.

Thank you, here's the whole number on the chips, PIC14000-04/SP 01D05GFI What does that mean? also looks to be an old chip, last update on data sheet is 1993.
l must admit that the idea of getting in micros is intimidating, partly to come up with the need for then and then how to write for them and to use them, current possible use is on my cruise control project, that may be OK, I'll know once the weather warms up and I can test it.

logically as per the datasheet from microchip, this number PIC14000-04/SP 01D05GFI is undoubtedly pre loaded OTP. it might not be useful for reprogramming.
if you are able to use it with what it has inside , by simulating hardware to suite it, (perhaps copying from the same pcb board as you get many components around it.).

I think I'll just forget about them and when I find a need for them, I'll go with the new stuff.
Thanks for your help, probably saved me a lot!
