pic controlled midi decoder (to squarewave)

hi, i am starting to design a midi interface using a pic16f690 for a 1 channel square wave output. I have found this thread https://www.electro-tech-online.com/threads/pic-16d628-midi-to-usart.90632/ that gives the code to interface the midi signal to the usart but i am unsure how to interpret the midi signal into a square wave output at the correct frequency and pitch bend. I am looking for places were i can learn how to interface it or some ideas from members of the forum to help me. Thanks

You first need to understand what MIDI is, and choose the commands you want to accept, and those you want to ignore.
