Hi folks I'm new to this forum so please forgive for any errors. I've recently got my hands on a good old Philips PM3540 scope, searching internet I can't find any information about it. The analogical part of the scope seems to be working correctly giving nice clean wavesforms, the big question is how does the digital part work? Has anyone here ever had or used one of these?

thanks
J.

Can you be just a little more specific on what you want to know? Keep in mind that we cannot give you a course on how analog scopes work.

No that's not what I want to know, I would like to know how the digital part of this scope works, if anyone has a copy of the manual that would be great

Jimmy,
There is an interesting utube video of the PM3540 displaying a single line of video. The display is ROCK steady and in my whole life have never seen such a steady display of video information like that.
My feeling is that the scope is especially designed for TV work and the so called 'logic scope' is about using digital counters to control the display of discrete lines of video. The digital logic would be counting line numbers and then displaying the video for that line. It sounds to me it more like part of the 'synchronising system'.
To understand it, I think your only hope is to get the manual. It is possible that Philips didnt make the unit but had their name put on a scope from a specialist CRO manufacturer. Philips used to make a lot of test equipment but generally it was because what they needed for their own designs wasnt available off the self. This CRO could well have been required in the development of Teletext and that goes back to the 1970's
hope this helps.

I had one of those, got rid of it last year, if it has a piece broken off the focus button and filed down then it was mine.

There is some digital circuitry, but the 'scope is definately analogue, from memory the digital section is justa bunch of cmos logic, it performs the trace chop and alternate functions, maybe also the trigger.

Its a veritable machine, good in its day, I repaired many a cordless 'phone with mine.

I think so, I'll have a look when I get home.

I couldnt find it in my lab, however it might be in the garage, I'll see tomoz.

Right found it.

However the manual I have is for the PM3216, I must have been using the wrong manual.

The chasiss's, power supply's and the y amps I think are the same (hence me repairing mine with the wrong manual), yours I think has some fancy precision hold off function.

What is it you need to know, I dont really want to scan the whole book, but some schems might be possible, I have a good scanner here at work.

well anything that would have to do with the digital functions, but as far as I know the 3216 doesn't have any at all. On the other hand if you have any schematics of the power supply that might come in handy

Two months ago, my boss came to me with an old PM 3540. Do you want to inherit this instrument he asked. I could not say no to such a gift, even if it is old. I knew it worked perfectly.

I got the instrument home, inclusive 1 analog probe, and a lot of cables to digitalte measurement tasks. I also believe that the manual I got with concerns that instrument.

Are you still interested in a manual, so I want to scan pages as *. Pdf files and send them to you ...

Greetings from Denmark.
