optical line detection

i've seen all the circuits used for line following robots, but those require a thick line. I'm looking for something that will detect thin black lines on a white surface. I was thinking of useing a regular LED for the light and a piece of fiber to carry the light to the detector. I don't know how this would work though. I'm looking for any suggestion for a good way to do this?
