I don't know what you did not making a Velleman kit work.
Are you using a plumber's soldering iron? (guarantees connections where they are unwanted
- some people tend to call them shorts.)
The very basic and necessary tools to make electronics works are:
- a soldering iron with exchangeable tips, possibly temperature controlled
- a set of different tweezers
- thin soldering tin (0.3 to 0.5mm dia with flux core)
- a magnifying glass (3 to 4 times magnifying)
- a pair of long nose plyers
- a sledge hammer, if the circuit won't work under any circumstances
