To design a network compatible energy meter that measures household electric power consumption in kilowatt hour unit and transfers the measured values to a host computer via Ethernet interface.
Energy meter is an instrument that measures the amount of electric energy used by a consumer. The meter is calibrated in kilowatt hour units. The company that provides electric power supply to the consumer, installs the energy meter near the power supply entry point in the consumer premises. The company reads the meter periodically by employing appropriate technical persons, and computes the power consumed by the consumer and charges the consumer at the predefined rate.
It requires considerable amount of man power. It is time consuming process and also prone for human error. In this present project it is proposed to design a system which would measure the power consumption precisely at predefined intervals of time and transfers the data to a centralized host system via an Ethernet interface. It enables transfer of power consumption data from the consumer premises to the host system located at the company premises at any instant of time. It also enables to have the complete control over the service connection. It eliminates the need for manual collection of power consumption data from the consumer premises by employing man power.
