As for the segmented LEDs:
You can tie them to the same pins by using the common pin for each.

Say it is a common ground on the segmented LED. Say it's SEGLED1 and SEGLED2.

You use the PIC to pull the ground pin of SEGLED1 low while keeping the ground pin on SEGLED2 high. You set whichever segment needs to be set to show your number, then put SEGLED1's ground high and bring SEGLED2's ground low and show your number. Repeat over and over. Even though it's turning on and off, it's going so fast that to the human eye it just seems like it is constantly displayed.

Be cautious here and look and see what the reverse polarity ratings are for the LEDs and consider that you may need to use a transistor to bring it to ground depending on how much current it is going to need to sink.
