Need help designing a BABY MONITOR

Hi to everyone,
i am new to this forum and i would like to first say what a great forum it is. Anyway for my school project i have to design a baby monitor that can be turn on and off with a remote (it is a telecommunication project.) Since i am a telecom student i don't have too much experience with electronics, so can someone please help me and point me to a place that can help me?
It really have to be simple and not too complicated.

The simplest way is to build an FM transmitter which can broadcast to a standard FM radio but you might not be allowed to do that since you'd be relying on an off the shelf receiver.
