I think that diffusion current is composed of minority carriers that are passing from one side of the junction to the other side (where they are considered minorities).
My best guess is from doping. Without minority charge carriers (holes in many instances) the majority charge carrier (electrons in many instances) wouldn't have any place to go. Minority/majority whatever, the energy is transferred from electron motion regardless of how you look at it.
