...also the sparkfun schematic puts a resistor on the tx line... do I need it/why do I need it?

Yes, does it need to be connected to ground? If not, why does the arduino tutorial suggest it?

And why is there a resistor on the TX line in the sparkfun schematic?

I feel you pointing the OPTO DARL 6N138S 's output, not the arduino's. If connect to arduino directly, those two are the same.
