Metal Detector

I would like to build a metal detector capable of detecting only Ferrous metals with a range of at least 3ft.

This would be for a commercial application and not for treasure hunting.

Does anybody have any ideas as to where I could get information on the construction of such a device-schematics, parts etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, I doubt you will find any Detectors capable of what you want.
Not even commerically built ones.

3 Feet is a pretty far distance, and also having descrimination to eliminate
non-ferrous metals, will also reduce depth of detection.
The size of your metal objecs will also be a consideration. Especially if they are smaller objects.
