Quite probably , these small high power lamps are prone to failure.
Anybody found an equivelent with a better life expectancy ?

I have seen projector bulbs rated for 300 (on the short end) to 2500 (on the long end) hours ... I think 50 is a typo

I think 50 hours is the typical length of life for that 150W tiny bulb, think about the temperature of its filament. Projectors come with a spare bulb.
You won't make that much light with an LED any time soon! The light bulb probably makes an awful lot of heat too, about 135W of heat and only 15W of light.

Try looking at the specs on a small torch bulb, they quote things like 4 hours!.
