I would replace it with BD240, the NTE49 is discontinued ( you probably know that though ) the pin order is not identical, but you can probably work around that, using the tab.

here's the datasheet

https://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/BD/BD240.pdf

there are likely other devices in this range that will do the job, this is just the first I thought of, hope it helps

i heard that tip 31 and 32 are close to nte 49 and 50 is this correct?

and thanks for your help

Actually, they are probably easier to get, than what I suggested, good work!, but you need to use the TIP31C, it has the 100 volt rating, the 31 is 40V, 31A is 60V, 31B is 80 Volt.

It's often hard to "reverse-substitute" for either NTE or ECG parts, since they tend to be over-rated in voltage and current so they can be used in a wider range of appications.

Here's the datasheet anyways:

ECG parts are not Original Parts. They are Generic Replacements for other Parts Manufactures . Not OEM. The part was a different Number at one Time. Probably a MPS-U07 by Motorola. If you cross referance that number it comes up with ECG49, NTE49, ELM49 all subs for that part.

Here are some links for you.NTE49=MPSU07/NTE188
