Hi I have a few frequencies that I want to listen to. Has anyone built a radio that can listen to nascar drivers at the races? These are the frequencies that they use at the race tracks. If no one has done it can someone give me some advice on how to start this project. I have some programming knowledge and have built lots of IR systems. Thanks for any help!

The easiest thing to do would be to buy a scanner which works in the UHF band.

I agree. The Uniden BC72XLT is available for around $80 on Amazon. It would take a huge amount of work to build something with even a tenth the quality and features of something like this. Don't build a receiver unless your goal is to build a receiver. If your goal is to listen to Nascar, then buy something.

I would think the channels are encrypted so other teams can't eaves drop. Just a guess.

Nope, looks like they are wide open. Probably don't even use CTCSS. It seems that scanners and headphones for listening-in at Nascar events is big business. Could be that Nascar forbids encryption. I wouldn't be surprised.

yea my goal is just to listen to nascar so it would be best to just buy one. I was only finding prices of like 170 so if I can get one for 80 then I'm happy. Thanks for the insight and tips. Jeremy

Apparently they don't encrypt the video signal, either. Another thing fans are doing is tuning into the car cameras.
