hey guys,
I'm conducting a survey about the Linux operating system and I would like to know how many people prefer Linux over the two main competitors, Windows and MacOSX, and also how many people would not have a problem buying software for Linux.

You may have done better setting this up as a survey with user options.

I use Linux and more specific the Susie distro. I can't say I prefer it to a Windows system. Simply because of my use and needs.

I use Linux pretty much exclusively. I tend to stay away from proprietary software (and yet, I make my living writing it--go figure) but if there were something I really needed which just wasn't available in a FOSS license, I'd consider it.

The only use I have for Windows these days is to periodically fire up Internet Explorer to fix some bizarre bug MS has managed to throw into its (mis)understanding of HTML/Javascript/CSS. ;) For instance, this is a recent one which I blogged about: **broken link removed**. Lovely.

Cheers,

Thanks for sharing that. It was an interesting and informative read.

-I only use Linux for my server in the basement. (Ubuntu!) Works great, I have it set up to serve and backup files from my other machines, and record from my cameras with zoneminder.

-For casual and work I have always used Windows machines.

-Why in the world would I buy software for Linux, it doesn't make sense to me.

-I hate Mac. For me it never works right, is slow, costs WAY too much, freezes/messes up all the time, and doesn't let me do things freely. None of my other machines ever have any of those problems...

Windows for workstations and FreeBSD for server here. I did load virtualbox on a couple machines with Ubuntu. I have to many windows programs I need for now, so I did not wipe Windows. But I needed Ubuntu to write some code.

Ubuntu for my mail/web/MythTV/Fileserver, Ubuntu for my media front end (Revo 3600 running 1080p) and Windoze for the laptops/desktops we use around the house.

ok, most of you seem to use it for workstations, server, and other forms of productive machines but what about linux for entertainment purposes(mostly gaming) and why you chose your answer

Linux is completely unusable for real gaming, not even x86 based Macs can do games well. The only platform for PC oriented games is currently Windows, there is likely to be no change in that anytime soon and it's decreasing dramatically in recent years. PC gaming software sales as of 2006 are a 970 million dollar market, console/handheld gaming software as of 2006 is a 6.5 billion dollar market..

Since 1998 PC gaming software sales have declined over 50% Console game sales have doubled. The PC game market isn't going anywhere anytime soon but the entire industry is in flux right now. That being said, if you want to play games get a console =)

One thing to keep in mind, many people have plenty of fun gaming using only flash based games, anything that can run a modern browser can do that.

Not if it starts with i

How very true!! I despise that about the iphone. Back on topic though..... I dual-boot Ubuntu and Winblows xp. I boot Ubuntu almost exclusively except when I need to program my PICs or use other specialised programs. I even got the Arduino software going on Ubuntu.
